I work with tons of IP cameras, from enterprise grade cameras (Vivotek) to consumer grade material (Foscam) and this camera blows every single one out of the water. The quality is well above the Vivotek 1 and 2 Megapixel cameras (obviously this is a 3 MP camera, but they always say that and it is by no means as excellent as it sounds).

What really gets me is the nighttime image quality. I have a Ubiquiti AirCam (the Bullet) installed in my driveway and when it hits dusk, you cannot see a thing. Obviously there is no IR abilities on the AirCam, but just use that for reference. With this Camera, even no moon and barely any ambient light you can still see excellent. Once you turn black and white and IR on, the area is lit up like it was daytime. I have included 4 photos. 1 with no IR, but with front porch light, with no IR and no front porch light, with IR on and no front porch light on and with IR on and front porch light. the results are nothing small of incredible.

Customer Video Review Part:: 1:17 Mins

I had some issues in my neighborhood, with car prowls, and a home shoplifting, so I chose to build a camera solution.
I had tried all the regular material, Foscam, Linksys, Dropcam type material… I eventually just threw all of those cameras away, they were beyond useless.
Then I found Dahua, a weird Chinese brand with modest documentation or support, but their cameras had high quality picture and IR.
I got some 720p ones first, which worked well, then I added 1080p camera, all record nicely onto a PC running Blue Iris.

One fateful nighttime in May, an arsonist went through the neighborhood! He set two homes on fire, several cars, a couple boats, and the last house he set on fire was mine!
The cameras recorded his approach up my driveway, and his deliberate actions setting my porch furniture on fire. It was a dark nighttime, but the IR did enough to get an thought of his clothing, race, height, etc.
It was one of my older Dahua cameras, the semi-HD one, which was a couple years ancient. The newer ones restore even better pictures.
After the fire was set, the smoke obscured my other porch camera, so its motion sensing wasn’t working as well, but it recorded the firefighter putting out the fire on the porch.

Since I was able to get video prove to detectives so quickly, and it was high enough quality, they blasted the pictures across every news channel, newspaper, etc and were able to bump him in less than 48 hours.

He has since been charged with multiple felony arsons, and is facing a longggg time in jail.

Without these cameras, he may by no means have been caught!

The quality outweighs the price tag. Def. got a suspicion of regard. I originally bought this item because I own a Huacam that was having early issues but most of them have been solved so I chose to not restore it just yet. I got this item to replace the Huacam and the quality is day and nighttime since the picture is just… well incredible for “what it is”. I say that since there are not that many quality cameras out there. You can go to a local BJ’s and buy a set looking around $800 bucks for everything to have horrible picture quality and a DVR that doesn’t work well at all. I do have mention that the Huacam had decent picture for a 720 resolution…

    Anyway, back to the review…

    Pros:

    – Someone mentioned the Web GUI isn’t that excellent. I do not know what this person is discussion about since the web client is probably the best I’ve worked with for IP network cams web page. I’m a software engineer and know what excellent UI/UX is because that’s my primary role at work. I have other cameras, DLink, Foscam, Huacam, and the web clients are HORRIBLE on all of them, not so much on the DLink.

    – Access control and a method of “brute force” security. If you fail login, it will lock you out. This is a feature DLink, Foscam, and Huacam do not have. I’m a programmer and I could write scripts that can brute force network ports if I wanted to so this prevents that from experience. Reminds me of the well loved fail2ban daemon for linux.

    – 3MP 1080 resolution is simply fantastic. The picture quality is awesome. I can adjust the picture quality for uncommon day / nighttime profiles. You really don’t get these many options like other brands provide which are way too plane jane. i.e. my Huacam, want to change the contrast, brightness, noise reduction for the nighttime vision for that camera…

    – Smaller profile. This camera is nice and compact. Everything about this camera is functional. The quality is all there. The pivot joint is solid and the single locking screw point is perfect. This is much better and not as time consuming if it were multiple screws. This makes it very simple to adjust the camera position.

    – Packaging… They used some fancier air bubble packaging sleeve tube thing. It was quite simple to unpack everything rather than wrestling with twist ties, tape, or other weird things they do.

    – Connected immediately. I was able to find the default IP address and then configure everything to be the static IP of choice. Port forward… done! Was not hard. I have a Huacam that had a horrible gotcha. I was monkeying around trying to get the cam on the network until an hour later I figured it was the IR (being active) drawing more current causing an issue. I was right… that was the problem. When I connected this one, I made sure that the IR was ON… no problems!

    Cons:

    – The web client does have a minor bug (occurred in chrome) when I had clicked a full size icon on the bottom left of the video preview, the scroll is disabled in the css material goods and needs to allow it to scroll (auto)… lol, debugging this by now.

    – This camera does flicker once in a even as. My other cameras do not have this. I reckon it’s due to some settings and my wireless connection being poor so it’s hard to say. It is more packets running through the pipes… I’ve by now ran diagnostics on my network and I know my server that acts as a DVR has a weak wifi connection. I’m going to add a couple of wifi booster antennas to see if that helps any. I’m also going to try hard wiring it.

    Installation tips:

I didn’t use the screws that came with this device instead I used spring anchor screws aka toggle bolts since I’ve mounted the camera under an aluminum soffit. I drilled 3 tiny holes and shoved the spring toggle bolts right through. Tightened up the screws and it’s a very clean install. I’ve uploaded photos of my camera under a soffit for those who care to see what it may look like under a soffit.

    Bonus notes:

If you’re looking into a high quality camera with a fantastic web client counting many uncommon settings and preferences, this is the camera for you. I’ve invested in mid ip cams such as the Huacam and the bonus cost of the Dahua is worth every penny. I’m still contemplating in returning the Huacam just to get my refund to invest in another Dahua… I probably will do that…
