Wifi interference, poor documentation, very limited support!, July 14, 2014

This review is for the Defender Sentinel Pro Wireless 8 CH 1TB DVR with 6 Wireless 520TVL Cameras with 100ft Nighttime Vision-Black. I preordered this on May 28, and it was delivered on June 17. For the next three weekends I tried to setup this camera system, but hit road blocks at every turn.

First, the documentation that comes with the system is a joke. The blue-collar is in PDF format on a CD, and is written at a very high level that glosses over much of the vital details. For example, I spent 45 summary looking for anything about pairing a camera to the receiver unit. There is absolutely nothing about this in the PDF blue-collar. There is mention of it on one of the printed quick start guides, but it doesn’t give any details and is very nearly useless. I finally figured out that you have to hold the button on the back of the receiver to start a 30 following countdown timer. You then have to press a button on the back of the camera to pair it to the receiver. You had better pair the cameras before you install them, or make sure you have a helper. Otherwise, you will run yourself ragged trying to hit the camera button before the 30 seconds are up.

Following, since this is a wireless system it uses telephone system signals to transmit from the cameras back to the receiver units. I thought this was a fantastic thought, and I was looking forward to not having to drill huge holes to route all the wires. I veteran it out and it worked fantastic, had very excellent range, and the video quality was impressive. But, it was all too excellent to be right! Every time I would start up the cameras even as testing, my wife would complain about the internet being slow on her laptop. So, I jumped on the speedtest website and sure enough, when the cameras were transmitting my Road Runner internet speed on wifi would drop from 20Mbps down to .83Mbps. So, I figured the cameras were just overlapping on my wifi channel, and I changed my AP to channel 11 from channel 1. No change, so I went down to channel 6… still no change. I finished up trying all 11 channels, but still could not get my wireless speed back. I even tried two uncommon AP’s, one being the Ubiquiti Pro Enterprise. This was certainly not acceptable for me!

Third, Defender’s thought of support is for you to log a ticket on their website, and they will get back to you in 24 to 48 hours. No, I don’t reckon so! I just spent over $800 on this system, and you can’t provide basic telephone support for it? Thanks, but I’ll look elsewhere for a security camera system. So, this system was boxed up and shipped back to Amazon over the July 4th weekend.

Excellent System for the money, though not technically “wireless”, August 4, 2014

We’ve had a series of serious trespasses and break-ins over the past few years, so it became all too clear that we needed more information and protection than we were getting from our alarm security company. In early June, my Truthcam (used by hunters to see which animals are about) picked up five images of someone appearance around the back of the house and opening the kitchen door. Five days later, the alarm went off at the following floor dialogue box when I was not at home. After weeks of the culmination of on-again off-again of research, I chose on this product. Incidentally, I added two more cameras/receiver to complete the 8 CH set.

    Cons:
1.) Not Wireless: It would be better to call these types of “wireless” cameras “telephone system” or “Wi-Fi” cameras, since they are still dependent upon a local power source outlet. Sure, the cord is 65′, but it is still attached. You can’t just fix it onto a pole or tree down the way, and face it toward the house; you need to have a bona fide outlet. My research has indicated that there are systems that rely on batteries, but the camera needs so much juice the batteries need to be changed inconveniently often. Apparently we are not there yet, unless you deliberate a car battery set up convenient. Also, there are 520’ of wires (with my 8 camera set up, and not counting the power cord and monitor cables) attached from the DVR to the receivers. They are the tiny thin type, and you keep them tightly wound, but again the concept that this is somehow a “wireless” system stretches ones credulity.
2.) Signal Issues: This system facility best when the camera and receiver are in the line of sight of one another. In our stone house, the cameras set up on the same side of the receivers pick up the signal fine, but the cameras on the other side of the house pick up the signal intermittently. To overcome this, I bought 4 x 25’ video cables (best to order online) and BNC male to RCA female adaptors (Telephone system Shack), then went the receiver closer to the more distant cameras. The signal worked better, but the whole thought of “wireless” is so you don’t have cables all over the house. I took them as far as the home entertainment system so as to not have the cables going through the hallway and into the living room. Still not line of sight, but the signal doesn’t drop nearly as often.
3.) Resolution: Resolution of the cameras is 520, not HD by a long stretch. If you need face recognition for court, the defense could call into question the identity of your suspect if the image was captured at a distance and/or at nighttime. This camera can capture infrared (IR) images at nighttime at 100’, but you’d be hard pressed without bonus identifiers to clearly mark out facial features.
4.) No Monitor: Monitor not included, though not a huge deal since you can get a nice new one at Costco for less than $200.

    Pros:
1.) Flexibility. When the camera and receiver are in line of sight, the only issue is the max range of 750’, which is surprisingly far. We’ve one receiver near a dialogue box, and a camera across the lawn to a tiny wooden building that has electricity. The camera faces the driveway, so a building that was previously an visual obstacle is now a source of security. Another camera faces an area where someone could hide beneath the windows, but the flexibility of the system allows that area to be discretely monitored.
2.) Not obtrusive: Tiny black cameras are very discrete. The receivers are 5”x5”x1,” flat and, aside from the power cord and two cables, relatively out of the way. The DVR is tiny, 9”x10”x1.”
3.) Simple Set Up: I had a wired system slated to be set up in another building via contractor. The wired took two guys all day, even as this system required about four hours of one contractor’s time and some help from me. It’s best to be bestow so that you can determine which management that you want your cameras to be pointed.
4.) Features: Motion detection, email alarm, recording search, large hard disc, simple to use and delete previous recordings, buzzer on/off, mobile device via Internet monitoring. All fantastic features, simple to figure out and remember. Remote facility fantastic, mouse option (press 0 to get the mouse to work initially.
5.) Price: I paid $1200+ counting shipping since the same system advertised at $799 was Out of Have a supply of. All surveillance systems worth their salt are expensive; the cabled ones more so. For the money, this model appears to be one the best that you’re going to get. I deliberate this to be in the lower range of the better camera systems; pay any less and you’ll likely end up with a fantastic deal of frustration and disappointment, or just junk that doesn’t work.

Pro/Con: I deliberate the fact that I had to have an electrician install some extra outlet receptacles in…

Wifi interference and limited support, November 14, 2014
    By

    Verified Buy(What’s this?)
This review is from: Defender Sentinel Pro Wireless 8CH 1TB Security DVR Counting 6 Wireless 520TVL Cameras with 100ft Nighttime Vision,21313 (Electronics)
This review is for the Defender Sentinel Pro Wireless 8 CH 1TB DVR with 6 Wireless 520TVL Cameras.
I bought this for my grandfather and set it up inside his house. We do not use this for outside surveillance. Set up took about three hours, which included unboxing, mounting cameras and syncing cameras to the receivers.
For the most part the cameras work pretty excellent and are honestly clear.
The largest drawback was the wifi interference causing the wifi range to be about 10 feet and slowing to about .3mb . After limited support from their customer benefit, I concluded that it is a frequency issue, so changing channels on your modem will not fix the problem. These cameras run on a 2.4ghz frequency, as do most modems and routers. So to resolve the wifi, I had to get a new modem/router that ran on a 5.0ghz frequency. This will fix the wifi issue, but look to spend another $100 bucks to get this done. I went with the TPLINK TDW8980 N600 and it fixed everything as long as your device has a dual band wireless card so it can run on a 5.0ghz frequency.
If you are looking for someone to walk you through the setup, then look for something else. You will not find much support from their customer benefit or the literature they provide. They give brief overviews and is not very detail oriented. But, if you are a do-it-yourself type and honestly tech savvy, then you should be excellent to go with this system.
