I’m a bit surprised at some of the more critical reviews of this camera; it’s a very high quality piece of gear.

Setup was straight-forward; I’d recommend you keep it on a static IP just so it’s simpler to find later. (Or, alternatively, configure your DHCP server / router to always give it the same IP.) I saw some complaints in other reviews that you’ve got to do wired configuration, but if you’re running a wireless secure network (and please tell me you are!). there’s no way to get around that.

If you want internet access to the camera (which is well-secured, but could use more config options for individual users), there’s a DynDNS option on the camera. (I just use Windows Home Server’s built-in dynamic DNS.) You also MIGHT need to do some blue-collar port routing; my Verizon FIOS router didn’t require it, but my D-Link DGL-4100 seemed to. It probably depends on your router’s implementation of UPNP.

Otherwise, it’s pretty much set and forget. My spouse uses the Baby Monitor HD app on her iPhone; I just go with Y-Cam’s Machine app on my own phone. Picture quality is what you’d expect from an IR camera, and the FOV is perfect for seeing the entire crib (and not much else) when mounted near the ceiling. I am not super impressed with the mount, but it holds up. As you may have guessed, we just use the camera for peeking in on the baby when we’re on a uncommon floor, or when he’s being babysat in the evening.

We did have an incident where the baby got creative and pulled the camera (but not the mount!) down by tugging on the wire (which we thought was well-secured…). Other than giving him a bit of a well-deserved scare when it came crashing down, both baby and camera were fine.

Excellent piece of hardware, November 18, 2011

Like many people, I bought this along with the Baby Monitor HD App to use a baby monitor. The combination is working well enough with the few expected glitches you’d expect from such technology. If you’re a DIY person that wants the range and extra bells and whistles, this is a fantastic solution. If your wife is like mine and wants plug and play, I recommend the Motorola baby monitor.

The only reason I’m not giving the camera a 5 is because the setup is not as simple as I would have liked. It’s still pretty simple but I switched to Mac about 3 years ago and now expect everything to be idiot proof. You install the software, it finds the camera, you do a basic setup and then it restarts. Here’s my complaint. To do anything else, you need to have the IP address of the camera. They tell you this so its my fault. But I expect setup software to be like Airport Utility and always be able to find the hardware.

So I marked down the IP address and pretty much everything else worked after that. I did have a further hiccup which was my fault. I did a firmware update on my Airport Extreme and it issued the camera new IP address. So that’s something to look out for.

Basic impressions of the hardware are that it does everything its supposed to do. Camera facility fantastic. IR has excellent range. Lights up the entire room and I can see everything. I am using it wirelessly and I have not had the drop out problems others have noted. But the whole reason I got this camera is b/c I couldn’t fine a regular monitor that had enough range because my house has a lot of wireless signal blockers. As a result, I have multiple wifi wireless access points so my house wifi signal is probably better blanketed than most. Mic is sensitive and picks up all noises I need.

The only two things I’d change on this would be to have the LED lights be completely invisible when the IR is on. For clarification, the IR light is invisible to the human eye but when you turn them on, you can see a faint red glow appearance from the LED’s. I know there are IR LED’s that are completely invisible but apparently they’re more expensive so I be with you. But it’s something to note. Particularly if you’re using this is a hidden security camera. People will see the red LED’s at nighttime and know there’s a camera there.

Following feature would be if you could go and rotate. Once again, this costs money. But there are cheaper cameras out there that can be in the least panned and at an angle. I was mostly locked into Y-cam as it’s the only camera compatible with the app I wanted.

That’s my hardware review. If you’re attracted in how I paired it up with the Baby Monitor HD app, keep reading.

First of all, I give the app about an 8 out of 10. So before my slight complaints make it signal like I’m miserable, I’m letting all know I reckon its a fantastic solution with a few issues.

The largest is through no fault of their own. As of today, through no fault of their own, you cannot get audio through the App and a Mac running OSX Lion. Lion dropped support for AMR audio. So if you want to use the camera with audio on your Mac, you leave the audio setting on the camera alone. But then you will not get audio on your mobile device through the App. If you want to use the iphone audio, then you have to thrash audio to AMR and then you lose audio on the computer. This was a problem for us b/c we have a computer in the kitchen/ family room and I was plotting to use it as a primary monitor. Fortunately, my brother had just upgraded his wife to an iphone 4S so we were able to inherit her iphone 3G and repurpose it as a dedicated baby monitor for that room. With the app running, it does burn battery so not the best thought to use your primary iphone or ipad as the baby monitor. Fine for overnight as I leave my phone plugged in overnight. Would have been better if I could leave my desktop running all through naptimes.

The audio issue is clearly stated on Y-cams website so they’re not hiding from this. It’s up to Sunshine Apps to develop audio support that facility with the Mac. I hope that happens soon but who knows.

IR Nighttime Mode – One of the things I like about the camera is the ability to turn the IR on and off. I have no thought if IR on all nighttime is terrible for the baby. But you can see some red lights and I do notice babies will fixate if there’s only one light on in a room. So I like being able to turn the red LED IR lights off in the least. You can do that from the Y-cam software or from the Baby Monitor app. The only thing you have to know is that you must log into the App with the administrator password for the camera for this feature to work. Once again, it’s in the Help for the app but it’s buried. In my ever secure computing world, I thought I was being clever by setting up uncommon user accounts on the camera and just messed for myself up. Most of you will set up an…

Poor Wifi Connectivity. Cam died after 10 months, April 21, 2012

Camera worked fantastic for 10 months. The image quality was not incredible, but decent enough to be a baby monitor. We’ve had to reboot this thing thousands of times as it loses its wifi connection.

The power cord bunged working unless you had it plugged in at just the right angle. And now, the thing will only work for about 10 summary at a time before having to be rebooted.
